Composite Core vs Fluff Core: Which Diaper Technology Is Better

Choosing between composite (3rd generation) and fluff-SAP (traditional) cores is one of the most common questions in the diaper aisle. Both work well — the right choice depends on what you prioritize: thinness and modern engineering or proven performance and value.

How Each Core Works

• A fluff-SAP core blends wood-pulp fluff with SAP granules — fluff wicks liquid fast and SAP locks it in. It is the proven workhorse technology used for decades.
• A composite core removes the pulp entirely, bonding SAP into nonwoven layers. This allows a much thinner profile and better structural integrity — less clumping and sagging. Modern ultra-thin premium diapers use composite cores.

Comparing Performance

• Thinness: composite cores are dramatically thinner (under ~2mm) versus fluff cores which are bulkier.
• Anti-clumping: composite cores hold structure better; fluff cores can clump with heavy use and movement.
• Absorbency: both can reach high capacity, but composite cores depend heavily on high-performance SAP (AAP/SFC) — low-grade SAP in a composite core can gel-block.
